Account user roles

What Super Admin, Admin, and Standard members can do on a Lancer account.

Overview

Every Lancer account has one owner. That person is the Super Admin. On a client account, the owner can invite other people as Admin or Standard members. Those roles decide who can manage the account and who can only work on the projects they belong to.

Team invites are available on client accounts only. A freelancer or agency account is run by its Super Admin and does not have Admin or Standard members.
  • Super Admin — the account owner. Full control, including the account profile, billing, and removing members.
  • Admin — a manager. Same day-to-day control as the owner, except they cannot change the account identity or remove people.
  • Standard — a contributor. Works on projects they belong to. Does not manage the team, jobs, connections, or money.

At a glance

Client accounts use all three roles. A freelancer or agency account has only a Super Admin, so only that column applies there.

Super Admin

The Super Admin is the person who created the account. That role cannot be given to someone else. A Super Admin can do everything an Admin can do, plus the account-level actions below.

  • Rename the account
  • Edit the freelancer, client, or agency profile, including the company image
  • Change the account type
  • Remove members from the account
  • Open Subscription & Billing and manage the plan
  • See posting credits on the dashboard

Admin

Admins run the work of a client account. They are not limited to tasks assigned to them. They cannot become the owner, and they cannot remove members.

Team and account settings

  • Invite people as Admin or Standard, change those roles, and cancel a pending invite
  • See member email addresses and pending invitations
  • Set anyone's display title
  • Turn project creation on or off for Standard members
  • Change the business type used for tax labeling
  • View subscription details, including seats and pricing

Projects, tasks, and the dashboard

  • See every project tied to the account, not only projects they belong to
  • Act as a project manager on projects the account owns, including creating and editing tasks
  • Are added automatically as a project manager when someone creates a project
  • Use an account-wide dashboard that includes work done by the whole team and by hired freelancers
  • See who each task is assigned to

Jobs and connections

  • Post, edit, close, and reopen jobs, and review applications
  • Send job invitations and handle contracts on the client side
  • Submit job reviews and link a hired job to a project
  • Accept or decline connection requests
  • Read and send connection chat, and use applicant review chat on the client side

On a freelancer or agency account, the Super Admin also has the money and customer tools below. Client accounts do not use income, expenses, or invoices.

  • Income and expenses, invoices, and bank review
  • Stripe and bank connections
  • Create, update, and delete customers and their documents

Standard

Standard members contribute on a client account. They can do the work they are given. They cannot manage the team, hiring, connections, or account settings.

What a Standard member can do

  • Use the dashboard, tasks, projects, and worklogs
  • See the member directory (name, role, and title) without email addresses or pending invites
  • Change only their own display title and notification preferences
  • Create projects, unless an Admin or Super Admin has turned that off. It is on by default.
  • On a project they belong to, use that project's role: manager, member, or viewer
  • See a personal dashboard of their projects and the tasks assigned to them
  • Look up customers when logging time. They cannot change or delete customers.
  • Log time on a project only if they are a member of it

What a Standard member cannot do

  • Invite people, change roles, or open team management
  • Change account settings, business type, the account name, or the profile
  • See subscription pricing or seat details
  • See projects they are not a member of, or other people's tasks
  • Post or edit jobs, review applicants, send job invites, or manage client-side contracts and reviews
  • Respond to connection requests or use connection chat
  • Use income and expenses, invoices, bank connections, or Stripe

How roles work on projects

An account role and a project role are different. Super Admin and Admin are treated as project managers on every project the account owns. A Standard member only sees projects they have been added to, and their access on that project is manager, member, or viewer.

  • Project managers can create and edit tasks
  • Project members can create and edit tasks
  • Project viewers can read the project. They cannot edit tasks.
Settings → Account settings includes “Allow standard users to create projects.” When that switch is off, only Super Admins and Admins can create projects. Existing project membership does not change.

Where to manage roles

On a client account, a Super Admin or Admin opens Manage team from the account menu, or goes to Settings → Team. From there they can invite someone, pick Admin or Standard, change a member's role, or cancel an invite that has not been accepted. How someone accepts that invite is described on the Account invitations page.

Super Admin is reserved for the account owner. It does not appear as a role you can assign. Removing a member is available to the owner only.
