Freelancer account

How to create a freelancer account, finish your profile, and use the tools that come with it.

Overview

A freelancer account is your workspace for finding clients, running projects, and getting paid. It is separate from a client account. The same login can own one freelancer account and, later, one client account. You switch between them from the account menu.

A freelancer account is run by its owner. Team invites for Admin and Standard members are a client-account feature, described on the Account invitations page.

Create the account

Start from Get started, create a login, and verify your email with the 6-digit code. The code expires in 30 minutes. After your email is confirmed, choose Freelancer as the workspace.

  1. Create a login with your name, email, and password, and accept the terms
  2. Verify the email address with the code Lancer sends you
  3. Choose Freelancer on the workspace screen
  4. Lancer creates the account and opens subscription checkout
  5. Subscribe, then finish the profile setup

The freelancer plan is $20 per month. Checkout starts as soon as the account is created. Until the subscription is active, the rest of the workspace stays locked. A client workspace is a different plan and is created separately.

One login can own one freelancer account. If you already have one, choose that workspace instead of creating another.

Finish your profile

After checkout, Lancer opens a setup wizard. You can skip it and return later from your profile. Find clients and Search jobs stay hidden until the required profile fields and identity verification are done.

The wizard walks through:

  • Account name, shown to clients and collaborators
  • Profile picture
  • Business type, used to label estimated taxable income
  • Job title and profile overview
  • Skills, up to 10
  • Hourly rate and weekly bandwidth
  • Tax document type, which you declare for hire paperwork. Lancer does not store or file the forms.
  • Education and work experience, both optional
  • A portfolio project, optional
  • Identity verification. Your country comes from the ID you submit.
  • Stripe, so you can invoice clients. You can connect it later from Integrations.

Find work and keep clients

Once your profile is complete, My business includes Find clients, Search jobs, Jobs, and My clients.

  • Find clients and search open jobs from your public profile
  • Apply to a job, or accept a job invitation from a client you are already connected with
  • Track applications and active jobs under Jobs
  • Keep each client under My clients, with chat after the connection is accepted
  • Keep working with a client you have already connected with, without buying another connect

Run the work

Project management is the day-to-day workspace: a dashboard, tasks, projects, and worklogs. On a project you own, you are the manager. On a client’s project you were hired onto, your project role is the one they gave you.

  • Create projects, tasks, milestones, documents, and time entries
  • See your own dashboard of projects and tasks
  • Log time against a project you belong to. Billable time uses the rate on the hired job.
  • Use project chat with the other people on that project

What a Manager, Member, or Viewer can change is described on the Project user roles page.

Invoices and money

Income and expenses is part of the freelancer workspace. Connect Stripe to send invoices. Lancer does not take a fee from those invoices. Connect a bank to review transactions next to the work.

  • Income and expenses dashboard, income, expenses, and bank review
  • Invoices created and sent through Stripe
  • Customers you are connected with, used when you log time and invoice
  • A business type on the account, so estimated taxable income is labeled on the dashboard

Stripe, bank connections, and AI tool tokens are under Settings → Integrations.

After you are set up

  • Rename the account and edit the profile any time from Settings
  • Change the business type from Manage accounts
  • Manage the subscription from Subscription & Billing
  • Add a client account later from the same login if you also hire people
