Posting a job

How a client drafts a job, invites existing connections for free, and spends a job credit to list it publicly.

Who can post a job

Posting a job is for client accounts. A Super Admin or an Admin opens Post a job, or starts from My jobs. Standard members do not post jobs, invite applicants, or list a job on the public board.

Creating the job and inviting people you are already connected with is free. A job credit, $50, is used only when that job is listed so anyone can apply. How connections work is described on the Connections page.

What you fill in

Post a new job walks through the posting one step at a time. You can go back and change earlier steps before you publish.

FieldWhat to enter
Title and categoryA title, plus a category such as Design & Creative or Writing.
SkillsOne to five skills from the catalog.
Project scopeHow long you expect the work to last: 1–3 months, 3–6 months, or 6+ months.
ExperienceEntry, Intermediate, or Expert.
ProjectOptional. Leave the job unattached, link an existing project, or create a project when you hire. If you leave the new project name blank, Lancer uses the job title.
BudgetHourly rate or fixed price, with a minimum and a maximum. The minimum cannot be higher than the maximum.
Description and filesA description of at least 50 characters. Files are optional: images, PDF, Word, Excel, text, or CSV, up to 25 MB each.

Linking that job to a project, or creating the project when you hire, is described on the Creating a project page.

Save a draft

Save as draft keeps the posting without opening it. A draft does not use a job credit, and people cannot apply yet. On My jobs, Resume creation brings you back to the same step.

The job can be opened only after the required fields are filled in: title, category, at least one skill, project scope, experience, budget, and description.

Invite connections or post publicly

The last choice is how the job should open. If you do not have a job credit, you can buy one from this step or choose to create the job without listing it.

ChoiceWhat happens
Just create the jobFree. The job opens so you can invite existing connections. It stays off the public board, so other people cannot apply until you list it.
Post to the job boardUses 1 job credit ($50). The job opens and anyone can find it and apply.
  • Until the job is public, you can invite only freelancer or agency accounts you are already connected with.
  • Each account can be invited once. The invited account’s admins are notified.
  • From My jobs or the job itself, List on public board spends a credit the first time. Unlist from public board takes it down and does not refund that credit.
  • Listing that same job again does not spend another credit.
Close application process stops new invitations and removes a public listing. Open for applicants turns applications back on. If the job had already used a credit, it returns to the board without spending another one.

After the job is open

An open job is published. You can still edit it while it is a draft or published. After you hire, it moves to in progress. Closing a hired job is covered in Closing a job. Those later steps are managed from My jobs.

Client hiring tools are also summarized on the Creating a client account page.
